File Tips & FAQs We took this opportunity to provide some tips to help avoid potential issues with your print files:
- Make sure you start with good images-- Almost nothing on the internet is intended to be printed. Please make sure your files are in the right color space (CYMK and Spot, NOT RGB: unless you need digital C Prints) and images are 300 dpi at the print size. Link all your images.
- Make sure you have provided .0125" overlap for any item that will bleed off that side. A full bleed page should be .25" larger in both directions. Include crop marks for trimming.
- Provide your fonts and high-resolution images. Often people think a common font need not be included. These fonts may have slightly different versions named the same way. Any item that has to be replaced on another computer adds some factor of error (remember re-flow in Microsoft Word?) If you are not a designer, that's absolutely fine since we will help you as much as we possibly can. The next tip can help you get everything together!
- One of the easiest ways to ensure your fonts are embedded is by preparing a PDF file. The steps for preparing a PDF file will vary according to the application that you utilize for design. For Photoshop, you flatten the layers...then Save as a PDF. For Illustrator, convert all text to outlines (you may have to select text blocks separately, then use CTRL+Shift+O) Use outlines for InDesign and CorelDraw too. For Quark, use File>Export>Layout as PDF-- Be sure to Check the Box for Embedding the fonts in the PDF options. Additional information can be obtained at www.createpdf.adobe.com if your program is not listed here. Please contact us for more detailed information on the steps outlines above. Zamzar.com is a good resource for getting print ready PDF files from your application.
- Whenever possible, please provide a previously printed sample of the project or one similar to it (a Newsletter, for example). These often help expedite estimates and help ensure that we do the best job possible. If a picture is worth a thousand words...imagine the value of a previously printed sample. The same holds true for seeing a file before the final design is completed as it's quite possible to design a job that cannot be printed. The sooner this is discovered, the quicker the recovery. If in doubt, please call or email us.
